Easy Storage Solutions for Kids Rooms !

Typical Scenario in a Kid’s Room : Toys, ballerina tutus, pirate swords, crayon, markers, paints and brushes, construction papers, trucks, miniature kitchen stuff, clothes, hats, books , board games...any or all of these strewn all over the place ...or… any or all of these spilling over the boxes and shelves.
However much you practice “put things back in its place” and all the other good habits, at the end of the day you are either wishing for more storage or you are wishing to hide all the messy storage area !

So when creating and designing the storage systems we have to keep in mind that:

  • It should be simple for the kids to use everyday
  • It should be easily accessible to the kids
  • It should be easy enough for the kids to maintain the room being organized
  • And yeah...then along with it being practical we also want it to look good! It should complement the style of the room…be it the pink doll room or the pirate themed room.
A tall order eh ! Well, here are a few stylish and efficient ideas & tips to help create that ideal storage system in your kid's rooms.

1) Double duty :
Multi-purpose the boxes and containers used. Like use a bench with storage areas underneath it. Use storage boxes with lids that can be used as seating.

2) Grow with them :
Use storage and organization containers that can be used even when your lil one become older. Like nesting bins, cubbies, closet and desk organizers.

3) Let's move it:
Movable storage solutions like small boxes, or boxes with wheels help in easy and faster clean up. How ? Well, its easier to corral the crayons or legos and put it back into the box that is right next to you… than carrying it all the way to the shelf where it belongs !

4) Make room :
Clear up the desk or work area by using storage solutions that can be hung on the wall. Another tip is to use storage solutions that can be hung by the side of the work table. This will help give the kids all the space they need to create their masterpieces.

5) I see you :
Use see-through jars and boxes. It’ll help the kids find things by themselves and put things back in the boxes where it belongs. This will decrease the number of “ Mom..where are my crayons” or “ Mom , I can’t find my stickers” to a large extent. Wudn’t we all just love that !

6) Name them :
Put tags and labels on boxes, shelf edges and racks so that kids know where to put back stuff or even where to find stuff. For lil ones, label the storage containers with pictures. It’ll be a great help to start them with the “put things back in its place” routine.

7) Open up the dance floor :
Make use of spaces that go un-used...like under the bed.  Using vertical storage solutions  and using extra closet space or a niche to tuck in a desk area will free up the floor space for the kids to roll around and have a ball !

8) It's curtains for the mess:
Ok…you have done all this and yet the desk area or the open closet or shelving looks like a mess…just draw the curtains. Using curtains help a quick cover up when company calls and even help bring in more color or pattern to style the room.

2 quick reminders:
  • Do make sure all vertical furniture and storage systems are securely fastened to the wall so that they don’t tip over !
  • De-clutter, purge & sort through all their stuff at regular intervals. And don’t forget to include your kids to help you in this routine.

Organizing and creating a storage system in any room is an easy task ...when you know what you want to store and where you want it. Hope these practical & easy ideas have inspired you to tackle the storage issues in your kid’s room in style.

Happy Styling !
